Deep Tissue Massage
What, exactly, is a deep tissue massage?
During a deep tissue, your massage therapist uses hands, arms, elbows, fingers, the weight of his or her body, and in some cases even glass, ceramic or wood implements. In addition, your licensed massage therapist will usually work against the grain of your muscles during this type of massage. Other massage techniques employ strokes applied along the grain of your muscles.
The goal of the massage is to deeply loosen and relax the muscles and their underlying connective tissues. The LMT uses slow, strong strokes and more pressure than you might experience in other types of massage sessions. The LMT might apply pressure to a particularly troublesome location for several moments before moving on to other parts of the body. The stronger pressure can feel uncomfortable at the beginning and your body may protest a little. You may also experience some soreness after the massage. This is normal and expected and should subside with regular treatment. You should always communicate with your massage therapist. Let him or her know if the treatment exceeds your comfort level – but also bear in mind that what you are feeling will, ultimately, lead to significant benefits and sense of well-being.
Many clients find deep tissue massage to be more helpful than other types of massage because this technique addresses deep muscular pain, stiffness, limited range of motion, and inflexibility. It is common for clients to feel “better than ever” within a couple of days following treatment.
If you have chronic muscle tension or injury you probably have adhesions. These are bands of rigid, painful tissue in your muscles, ligaments and tendons. Adhesions cause pain and limited movement, as well as inflammation and poor circulation through that region of the body. Regular deep tissue massage treatments will loosen, relax, and release these adhesions, reversing those conditions.
Deep tissue is a superb treatment for anyone with a chronic pain condition like fibromyalgia or a sports injury. It’s also very effective for anyone with limited mobility or range of motion.
Don’t expect deep tissue massage to melt away your tension after a single session.
Your condition has probably been building for some while, perhaps your entire lifetime, and it’s unlikely to be fully corrected in an hour. This technique is most effective when incorporated into an overall program of exercise, relaxation and regular massage.
